Apple's Tim Cook Hints At a Prepaid iPhone, Adds Fuel To the Fire Of Rumours

Labels: , , ,

The WSJ and Forbes has just mentioned some pretty good news. Remember the news about a smaller iPhone that would be hitting the prepaid market for $199? Well, Tim Cook from Apple might have just hinted at it when he talked to Bernstein Research analyst, Toni Sacconaghi. Cook mentioned that "Apple didn't want its products to be 'just for the rich,' but 'for everyone'; he also stated that Apple 'understood price is big factor in the prepaid market' and that the company was 'not ceding any market.'" Basically, Apple could be working on that prepaid iPhone that a bunch of tweens may be looking for.

So far, he mentioned that sales for the XOOM are going "relatively well", which doesn't exactly sound very positive. The CEO also said that he expects prices for tablets to drop in the second half of the year which is still pretty far away. Either way, we're looking forward to what else the company has up their sleeves.

Apple Refreshes MacBook Pro Line-Up With Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs, AMD GPUs, and Thunderbolt -- OS X Lion Dev Preview Now Available

Labels: , , , , ,

As expected, Apple has refreshed a bunch of their products today and it's right on Steve Jobs' birthday! The refresh includes the whole MacBook Pro Series. The base model is the 13-inch model and it's just like the leak said. It's sporting a 13.3-inch LED display with a 1,280 x 800 resolution, a dual-core Intel Core i5 2.3GHz CPU, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 320GB HDD, Intel HD 3000 graphics, an HD webcam, WiFi 802.11n / Bluetooth 2.1 support, a backlit keyboard, an SDXC card slot, FireWire 800, two USB 2.0 ports, and Light Peak aka Thunderbolt. The Thunderbolt tech inside of these new notebooks will offer your 10Gbps trasfer rates which is awesome but we'll see if it wins the battle versus USB 3.0 which is slowly rolling out. Sadly, the smallest model which is this 13-inch model only has options for integrated graphics so it's actually a bit of a downgrade. By the way, the battery life for these MacBook Pro has dropped to 7 hours which is likely real-time usage.

This model will be starting at $1,199, the 15-inch model will start at $1,799, and the 17-inch model actually starts at $2,499 and that's because you'll get a quad-core 2.2GHz CPU and a 750GB HDD as a standard. Only the larger two models (the 15 and 17-inch notebooks) come with AMD discrete graphics and, yes, Apple has ditched Nvidia for AMD. Of course, all models come with new Intel Core 2011 CPU options so they're pretty darn fast. Check it out on Apple.

Update: Engadget has mentioned that the Mac OS X Lion developer preview is now up on the Mac App Store.

HP Announces EliteBooks With 32 Hours Of Battery Life; Refresh ProBook b and s Series

Labels: , , , , ,

Like a bunch of other manufacturers HP h6as followed suit by announcing a bunch of refreshed notebooks. The company has announced new EliteBooks and ProBooks. First up we'll talk about the new EliteBooks which include the 14-inch 8460p and the 15.6-inch 8560p. Just when you thought Lenovo set the bar high with a 30 hour battery life, these notebooks can actually get a large enough battery for a record-setting 32 hours on a single charge. That's absolutely insane. Specs for both of these include Intel Core i3 / i5 / i7 CPU options, up to 8GB of RAM, up to a 750GB HDD / 160GB SSD, Radeon HD 6470M GPU, and optional HSPA+ connectivity if that's your thing. These two notebooks will reportedly be available for $999 and $1,099, respectively, starting on March 15th.

That wasn't all they announced though, they were also quick to announce the new ProBook b and s series. Starting with the b series which is above, it'll come in three models: 13.3-inch (6360b), 14-inch (6460b), and 15.6-inch (6560b). The spec sheets for all of these notebooks are pretty much the exact same as the EliteBooks so you get Core 2011 CPU options, up to 8GB of RAM, up to a 750GB HDD / 160GB SSD, and optional HSPA+ connectivity. Unfortunately, only the two larger models will get options for the Radeon HD 6470M GPU.

The last series that the company announced is the s series. These notbeooks also pack pretty much the same spec sheet but for these ones there's no options for SSD storage or HSPA+ connectivity. Instead you get optional HSPA / dual-mode HSPA/EVDO connectivity. This one will come in four models: 13.3-inch (4330s), 14-inch (4430s), 15.6-inch (4530s), and 17.3-inch (4730s).

These will also all be available starting on March 15th; the b series starts at $799, while the s series starts at a more budget friendly $579.

Of course, if LG did it then Samsung can put "Honeycomb" on a smaller tablet as well. Cross your fingers.

Sony has refreshed a bunch of their products today and it includes their new all-in-one PC, the VAIO L. This PC comes equipped with a 24-inch Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 resolution) multitouch display, Intel Core i5 / i7 CPU options, Nvidia GeForce GT 540M graphics, a Blu-ray drive, and even HDMI ports.

Underneath you'll also find up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, up to 1TB of HDD storage, four USB ports (two USB 2.0 and two 3.0), WiFi b/g/n/ / Bluetooth 3.0 + HS support, and Windows 7. The monitor itself can also be a standalone display if you want and it'll look great with your PS3. The interesting part about this all-in-one from the company is that the bezel is also touchable. For example, if you touch the VAIO logo in the top left corner it'll make the Media Gallery pop up. Other parts of the bezel will allow you to zoom in, flick between windows, and even to launch an on-screen keyboard just in case you don't have a physical one ready. Now only if they could transfer some of that goodness into their smartphones. The price hasn't been announced but it'll be available in the end of March - early May in certain places of Europe.
