A company I've never heard of before, SurfaceInk, has just shown off a pretty sweet-looking project. As you can see in the picture above, it's a tablet that may or may not hit the market. What you see is just a prototype and will be running on Ubuntu. This tablet will be sporting a 12.1-inch capacitive display with a [supposedly] 1,280 x 1,024 resolution, a Freescale i.MX51 800MHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU, WiFi b/g / Bluetooth 2.1 support, USB 2.0, an HDMI port, and just a front-facing camera. Furthermore, the specs are not final - seeing how it is a prototype. The company is said to also be working on a 7-inch and possibly an 8.9-inch model (with Gorilla Glass) as well.

Well, it looks like SmartQ has just released the V5 MID. Do you care? Do you want it? Well, you can scoop it up for right around the $160 mark. This MID comes with: a 4.3-inch touchscreen display, a 600MHz ARM11 CPU, 256MB of RAM, 2GB of internal storage, an SD card slot, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, and 1080p with its HDMI output. It's got Android, Ubuntu, and Windows CE 6.0 pre-installed so you know this thing is a monster.

SmartDevices has just unveiled their latest MID, the SmartV 5. This MID truly shines with its ability to spew out 1080p video via its HDMI output. Other specs include: a 5-inch WVGA touchscreen display, a 600MHz CPU, 2GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, WiFi / Bluetooth support, 256MB of RAM, a USB 2.0 and your choice of Android / Windows CE / Ubuntu as an OS. We don't know when it will be available, but JTShop now has a product listing for this MID - it's going for $260 USD. Check it out here.

The SmartQ 5 PMP is going head-to-head Cowon P5 and the only way it could possibly compete with it is if it has a small price tag. The SmartQ 5 does just that. The 4.3-inch touchscreen display with a 800 x 480 resolution is going to run on Ubuntu for a low price of just 899 Chinese Yuan (about $132 USD). Keep in mind that this PMP does have Bluetooth, WiFi and it even has GPS via USB. Unfortunately it doesn't have 3G, but it probably won't be released here anyway, so it doesn't really matter.
