ZTE Unveils V7 MID With Maemo OS and 3G Connectivity

Labels: , , ,

ZTE has just unveiled their latest MID and surprisingly enough it's not running on Google's Android OS. The ZTE V7 MID is running on the Maemo OS and has a 4.1-inch display with a 480 x 800 resolution, a 3.2MP camera, 3G CDMA1X / EVDO / HSDPA connectivity, a Marvell PXA310 806MHz CPU, GPS / WiFi / Bluetooth support, a microUSB port, and an SD card slot. As you can see in the picture above, it clearly packs a physical QWERTY keyboard along with a trackpad. The price and release date is still TBA.

Aigo Reveals Their Maemo-Based Walkshow NX7001 MID, Hitting the Market For $500

Aigo seems to have shown off their Maemo-based Walkshow NX7001 MID. It's not running Android but maybe you want the Maemo OS - that will magically turn into MeeGo in the future. The MID itself features a 4.3-inch WVGA resistive touchscreen display, a Marvell PXA310 806MHz CPU, 128MB of RAM, WiFi / 3G / GPS support, two cameras (front and back), and a microSD card slot. Priced at $500, it's a bit high and we don't know when they'll release it yet.

Compal Making a 4-Inch Nokia Smartphone? Set For H2 2011 Launch?

Labels: , , , ,

Nokia is reportedly working on a 4-inch smartphone or mini tablet if that's what you want to call it. This smartphone is set to launch with Maemo and it should have support for OpenGL ES 2.0. Compal is reportedly making this handset for Nokia but it won't hit the market until the last half of 2011, which is definitely a long wait. The CPU is said to be part of a Qualcomm 7000-Series chipset and could be the "tablet" that Fishlabs was talking about yesterday. Even though it states that this device will run Maemo it'll probably end up with MeeGo.

First Builds of MeeGo Now Available For Some Netbooks, MIDs, and the Nokia N900

Labels: , , , , , , , , , ,

If you're looking to be an early adopter of the new MeeGo OS then you can now get an early build of it. Intel Atom-based netbook, Intel Atom Moorestown handsets / MIDs, and the Nokia N900 are now eligible for the OS right now if you have any of those. The download (here) will boot off a USB or directly on the device themselves if you want to take the plunge. The full release is expected in May so it's just an early look of what the final product will look like at this point.

Intel and Nokia Fuse Moblin and Maemo to Make the MeeGo OS

Labels: , , , ,

Not what we were expecting but at Nokia's conference they announced (with Intel) that they'll be launching a new OS that fuses Maemo and Moblin into one. It will be called MeeGo. Don't worry, it won't be replacing Symbian but it will be replacing the Maemo OS (which was already good to begin with). "MeeGo isn't just for mobile phones either, it's for televisions, cars, netbooks, literally anything with a processor inside." At this point I don't really understand if this means we won't see a Maemo 6, but let's see how this works out. Check out the MeeGo site here. The first device launching with MeeGo should be in the second half of this year.

  • Performance optimizations and features which enable rich computational and graphically oriented applications and connected services development
  • No-compromise internet standards support delivering the best web experiences
  • Easy to use, flexible and powerful UI/app development environment based on Qt
  • Open source project organization managed by the Linux Foundation
  • State of the Art Linux stack optimized for the size and capabilities of small footprint platforms and mobile devices, but delivering broad linux software application compatibility
  • MeeGo currently targets platforms such as netbooks/entry-level desktops, handheld computing and communications devices, in-vehicle infotainment devices, connected TVs, and media phones. All of these platforms have common user requirements in communications, application, and internet services in a portable or small form factor. The MeeGo project will continue to expand platform support as new features are incorporated and new form factors emerge in the market.

Nokia Skipping Symbian^2; Symbian^3 In Q3, Symbian^4 In Q4 2010 Or Q1 2011, Maemo 6 H2 2010

Labels: , , ,

If you believe what Digitimes has to say then keep on reading. Apparently, Nokia is looking to skip Symbian^2 and they're planning to go straight into Symbian^3. This is great news because Symbian^3 will be coming in Q3 of this year and it will bring multitouch gestures to a handset near you. Along with that news, Symbian^4 is expected to launch at the end of this year or at the beginning of next year. Version 4 will likely be based on Qt so that the software will support both Symbian and Maemo simultaneously.

If you're still in love with the current Symbian there's no need to worry because Symbian S60 and S40 is here to stay but they'll be owning the cheap-end of the spectrum for Nokia. We all love Maemo 5 on the Nokia N900 and the good news is that we'll see Maemo 6 by the end of this year as well - hopefully on the successor to the N900. That's some pretty good Nokia news for the week.

Nokia Only Producing Around 10 Smartphones In 2010

Labels: , , ,

Nokia is definitely looking to make a push over the next couple of years and 2010 will be an important part of that. With the new version of both Symbian and Maemo coming next year, expect big things (I hope) from Nokia pretty soon. Well, Nokia has just announced that they will be cutting their smartphone line-up in half in 2010, so that'll come out to around 10 smartphones. Let's hope that Nokia packs in some multitouch capacitive touchscreens on those suckers and, of course, I assume will see the E72's successor sometime in 2010 as well.

Nokia has mentioned that they're looking into the low to mid-end range for some of their smartphones too, so that'll be good for you people overseas.

Nokia Throws Out Sneak Peek About What Symbian Could Look Like In 2010

Labels: , , , ,

At this point we know that Nokia is looking to update Symbian and Maemo next year. Well, a sneak peak of what Symbian will turn into is above (and on Engadget's site). Engadget points out that Nokia will be moving into the multitouch capacitive business with their new mobile OS, so that's definitely a good thing - and it took them long enough.

Nokia is not looking to change the OS per say, but they are definitely cooking up ways to fix the UI. They're going to improve the browser, bump up the scrolling to 60fps (only 15fps currently), and they're going to try to make the UI 3 times faster. It'll be simpler and faster to get to more important things that you'll need (for example: less touching for your fingers to get to your favourite song).

Check out the Engadget link below for a video on this "magical" UI. Of course, it's a work in progress.

Nokia Taking Symbian To a "Whole New Level" In 2010; Maemo 6 Coming In H2 2010 Too.

Labels: , , ,

From Nokia themselves, "In 2010, we will drive user experience improvements, and the progress we make will take the Symbian user interface to a new level." This means that they will likely be launching a whole new Symbian as a whole - Symbian^2 or something like that. Let's hope that Nokia does a good job tuning up this new Symbian, cause I'm always looking forward to it - especially with Samsung's Bada OS coming too.

Nokia focused on talking about what they're improving in the next Symbian, but they did mention that Maemo 6 will be available in the second half of 2010. I'm excited to see the next Symbian and Maemo 6 flaghsip handsets.

It also looks like 2010 won't be the year where Nokia decides to replace Symbian on their N-Series devices. Oh yes, this handset could also be launching towards the end of 2010, since it could be that Nokia N920 with Maemo 6.

Nokia Planning To Replace Symbian With Maemo For Their N-Series Devices? -- Nokia Speaks On the Issue.

Labels: , , ,

S60 has had a long reign for Nokia's N-Series, but it looks like that may come to an end over the next couple of years. According to the latest rumour, Maemo will be running on all of Nokia's N-Series devices. This is good news for Nokia's consumers because you can do much more with Maemo and Maemo, overall, is the better mobile OS. If you want to take a look at what Maemo offers, just look at the N900, which is a pretty good handset.

Update: According to Slash Gear, Nokia has already responded to the Symbian < Maemo rumours. They mentioned that these talks are "completely premature" which means that the statements could be true - or else they would've straight up denied it. Symbian looks like it really could see its last few years... Nokia is trying their best to be tight-lipped over the whole situation though. What you see below is exactly what they said.

“While it is our policy not to disclose details of our product roadmap, we’d like to explicitly communicate that we remain firmly committed to Symbian as our smartphone platform of choice. Any speculation on what our 2012 roadmap, including operating systems and product branding, are completely premature.
As we have stated earlier, Nokia has multiple platforms to serve different purposes and address different markets. Symbian is more successful than ever in bringing smartphones to the masses. Maemo is our software of choice for devices based on technology that you’d typically find inside a desktop computer. It delivers a different user experience and enables us to widen the market we can address.” Nokia statement
