The Palm Pre didn't have a virtual QWERTY keyboard when it launched and it actually still doesn't have one at the moment. Some people got fed up with the tiny physical QWERTY keys of the Pre, so they decided to hack it. Unofficially, the Palm Pre now has a virtual QWERTY keyboard, but keep in mind that they're still in pre-alpha testing, which means that it might not run as smoothly as you'd hope.
