MetroPCS Releases Their First LTE (4G) Smartphone, the Samsung (R900) Craft

MetroPCS has just announced their first LTE (4G) smartphone, the Samsung (R900) Craft. This smartphone features a 3.3-inch AMOLED display, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, GPS / WiFi / Bluetooth 2.1 support, a microSD card slot, a 3.2MP camera, and Android 2.1. This handset is going for $299.99 on a 2-year contract if you're interested. Check out their website (here) for the press release.

LTE-Packing Samsung (R900) Craft Could Hit MetroPCS In September For $300

Three days ago, the Samsung (R900) Craft leaked out in pictures and Unwired View has a bit more information regarding the launch of this LTE-packing handset. If you read the title then you already know where I'm headed. Apparently, MetroPCS will be launching the Samsung Craft sometime in September. It'll be sporting a touchscreen display, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 3.2MP camera, and the Touchwiz UI. It's pretty sad that the specs aren't all that high-end - you can't even consider it a smartphone. But, that'll keep the price down which is rumoured to be $300 contract-free.

LTE-Packing Samsung (R900) Craft Gets Pictured, Reportedly Being Tested

We've seen an outline of the Samsung (R900) Craft before but it looks like MetroPCS' first LTE smartphone has just been pictured. This smartphone is reportedly being tested right now and will be launching for around $300 when it hits the market. This smartphone should sport a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a touchscreen display, a 3MP camera, and Bluetooth support.

MetroPCS' Samsung R900 To Be Called the Craft

To this point we already know about Samsung's SCH-R900 smartphone and we know that it's headed to MetroPCS in the USA. This smartphone is going to feature LTE connectivity, a 3MP camera, Bluetooth support, and a touchscreen display. Apparently, MetroPCS will be launching this as the Samsung Craft which seems like an awkward name.

Samsung SCH-R900 Finally Hits the FCC, Rightfully Sporting CDMA / LTE

Earlier this year there was a bunch of buzz about the Samsung R900 which would be an LTE phone destined for MetroPCS. Well, the handset has just hit the FCC and it confirms CDMA / LTE connectivity along with Bluetooth / WiFi b/g support. The rest of the specs haven't been mentioned yet so we'll have to wait for that. Check out the FCC filing here.

Verizon To Have 4G In Up To 30 Cities This Year, Phone Expected In H1 2011

Verizon held a conference yesterday and I almost missed it. Thanks to Electronista, we know exactly what they said. Verizon's CTO, Tony Melone, mentioned that 25 to 30 cities in the US will have LTE-based 4G connectivity by the end of the year. That comes out to about a third of the whole country which is great news. He also mentioned that their 4G coverage will be doubled in the next fifteen months and that they "should finally match or exceed their 3G coverage by late 2013.

Unfortunately, he went on to mention that their first 4G phone won't launch until the first half of 2011, which is pretty late considering that Sprint USA is planning on launching the amazing HTC EVO 4G sometime this Summer. It's not confirmed what Verizon's first 4G phone will be but it's rumoured to be the Samsung r900 (probably not pictured above, but that was the LTE phone that was showcased at CTIA last year).

Verizon's 4G connectivity will generally be the same technology as AT&T's future 4G connectivity so I'm looking forward to the competition between the two carriers. Verizon's current EVDO 3G peaks at 2-3Mbps and Verizon's future 4G network is currently running at 5-12Mbps with the peak projected at around 40-50Mbps.

MetroPCS Launching LTE 4G Network In the US This Year, Samsung r900 Launching This Year

It looks like MetroPCS is looking to gain the upper hand in the latter half of the year. They plan to launch their LTE 4G network this year and their phone of choice will be the Samsung SCH-r900. The handset you see above likely won't be what the r900 looks like since it's a year old LTE phone that was pictured at CTIA 2009. The specs for the r900 are still unknown, so we'll have to wait another day for that.
