Next Nintendo Wii To Feature Blu-Ray Drive, Launching in 2010; Netflix Coming To Current Wii

Labels: , , , , ,

Today we've just heard the latest rumour about the upcoming Nintendo Wii 2 / WiiHD. The rumour states that the next-gen Wii will feature a primary Blu-ray drive with, of course, 720p / 1080p output. It's expected to launch worldwide on the exact same day sometime in 2010. Yes, the current Wii is fairly last-gen (graphics-wise), but it's still the leading console of this gen (between the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3). If a new Wii comes out next year I'd be surprised because it still seems to be selling pretty hot, even though Nintendo is reporting a slight decline in sales.

Oh yeah, we're also hearing that Netflix support will be coming to the original Nintendo Wii.

Netflix Headed To the PS3 Starting This November, $8.99 Monthly

Labels: , , , ,

It looks like PlayStation 3 owners will be watching a lot of movies in the near future. The rumour turned out to be true so it looks like Netflix will be coming to the PS3 next month (November). Like Xbox 360 owners, PS3 users will be able to watch as many movies as they want 24/7 for $8.99 a month. Of course, all you'll need is a Netflix account.

According to the official announcement, which confirms speculation that Netflix streaming would come to a console that isn't the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 owners will be initially required to have a free, Netflix-provided Blu-ray disc in the console to watch said movies, taking advantage of Blu-ray's BD-Live tech.
(You can quickly request one at netflix.com/ps3, PlayStation 3 owner.)
Later, we should probably expect Sony and Netflix to offer a firmware update or application that will do the work of the Blu-ray disc. Looks like the PS3 implementation of Netflix will be similar to the Xbox 360 version, letting users browse and update their "Watch Instantly" queues from the XMB.
More details on the good news is available at the PlayStation.blog.
