Sony S1 and S2 Get Official In Tokyo; PlayStation Certified and a Dual-Display One

Labels: , , , , , , , ,

Sony's making a few products official during their Tokyo event today and they're great! They shouldn't be too unfamiliar because Engadget talked about these "Honeycomb" tablets back in February earlier this year. The S1 is the one that looks like a regular tablet "with a curved top much like a folded magazine" along with a 9.4-inch display, a Tegra 2 CPU, dual cameras, a custom UI, and it's PlayStation Certified.

The other tablet is the S2 which is sporting dual 5.5-inch displays with an awesome 1,024 x 480 resolution. It also packs the Tegra 2 CPU as well as dual cameras so these tablets are definitely to be reckoned with. I can't imagine it being cheap though. This tablet will, of course, have WiFi as well as 3G / 4G connectivity where needed. Apparently, these will be available in the Fall and maybe we'll get a real name soon. Engadget's sources back in February told them that the S1 could launch for $599, while the S2 could cost $699. Who knows if that will stay true when it actually becomes available in a few months.

They are very nice sleek tablets, sort of what you expect from Sony. S2 is interesting but not sure on how practical it will be as surely the dual screen approach will compromise weight to support the screen and probably performance too. But I think the issue for any tablets going in the market these days will be the OS.
