WebOS 1.2 Now Available For Palm Pre Owners

Labels: , ,

It looks like WebOS 1.2 is now available for Palm Pre owners. The best part about this update is that it now has support for paid apps, so you can insert your credit card information. Unfortunately, there still aren't any paid apps. You'll have to wait another day for that. Oh yeah, I believe iTunes syncing isn't working right now, so you'll have to wait for the next update.

Moblin Version 2.0 Now Available For Download On Your Netbook

Labels: , , ,

According to the latest reports, version 2.0 of Moblin is now available for download if you have Moblin version 1. It will be a direct upgrade, but keep in mind that it's still missing key features that were spotted in Moblin version 2.1 that was shown off at IDF last week. Moblin 2.1 should be available in Q4 of this year.

While Moblin version 2.1 is being showcased at IDF 2009 (mostly with added support for mobile devices), version 2.0 is finally out of beta and a final version is available to download onto your netbook. This version is in a shippable state and Moblin expects OSVs and OEMS to be shipping products with version 2.0.
Moblin also introduces the Moblin Garage (online catalog) and Moblin Application Installer, which is their app store. These features don’t come with Moblin 2.0 and are still not finished but you can install the Application installer easily. It should come standard with version 2.1.

Labels: , , , , ,

We've already heard about the Asus Eee PC 1201N and now we're hearing about another possible possible, the 1201HA. Unlike the 1201N, this model will not have Nvidia's Ion chipset, but it looks like it could have integrated GMA 500 graphics via Intel's US15W Poulsbo chipset and an Intel Atom Z520 / Z530 CPU. As of right now, we still don't know the release details, so just look out for it.

LG Officially Announces the Chocolate BL20, Launching in the UK in Q4

Labels: , ,

LG has officially unveiled their BL20 Chocolate handset. Although not as desirable as the BL40, this slider will be hitting the UK in Q4 of this year. This handset reportedly has: a 5MP AF camera with a flash, Bluetooth 2.1 + A2DP support, a microSD card slot, and an FM radio. Unfortunately, this handset will have EDGE connectivity with no 3G HSDPA connectivity. Check out what LG had to say below.

Update: Engadget has reported that this will launch for 269 euros ($394 USD) unlocked.

LG’s newest Chocolate flavour slides to market
Berkshire, September 28, 2009 – LG Electronics a global leader and technology innovator in mobile communications, today announces its second New Chocolate phone, BL20, featuring a sliding keypad. The newest addition to the Chocolate series follows the launch of the stylish New LG Chocolate phone (BL40) at the start of September.
Available in the UK in Q4 at O2, the BL20 features a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash in a slim casing measuring just 12.3mm in depth.
The handset also features touch-sensitive controls which are discretely concealed on the sides of the phone. Users can instinctively feel their way around functions such as volume control and camera zoom for quick adjustments.
Widget Hotkeys enable users to personalise the phone to directly access favourite features for weather, news or personal updates. A new feature includes Clear Memo Capture which captures text, handwritten notes and drawings with maximum clarity, offering a different way to record information.
Jeremy Newing, head of marketing, LG Mobile UK and Ireland says, “Boasting advanced new features such as Widget Hotkeys and Clear Memo Capture, the BL20 offers consumers a design alternative to the already successful BL40 with its widescreen display.”
The New LG Chocolate BL20 is referencing the original Chocolate’s design characteristics such as glossy black surface accentuated with red highlights but reinterpreted them in a sliding keypad handset. Notably, the handset has refined its red navigation keys – part of LG’s overall design language – which are revealed when the phone slides open. It has evolved from the iconic design of its predecessors combining enhanced interactive features with a sleek minimalist look aimed at style-conscientious consumers.
“Standing proudly alongside the BL40, the BL20 expands the Chocolate series with a beautiful but practical slider option reflecting our leadership in design,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “The New LG Chocolate BL20 offers consumers another way to experience the luxurious style and high performance that is symbolic of the LG Chocolate series but at a more affordable price.”

European Commission Looking to Ban iPhone's From Being Sold in Europe

Labels: , , , , ,

Even though we just got word this morning that Orange would be offering the iPhone 3G and 3GS later this year, the European Commission is looking to ban iPhone's from being sold in Europe. The European Commission is reportedly asking Apple "for information on the alleged iPhone explosions." In addition, "Apple has not yet officially responded to the allegations of exploding iPhones and the EC is investigating the issue. Perhaps Apple will step up research in an effort to prevent the popular device from being banned in Europe." We'll just have to see what Apple's response will be. They have said once before that's it's your fault and not theirs.

You can view the pretty lengthy article at Engadget here. Apparently, Apple could be utilizing "Light Peak" in their new systems which are set to launch in Fall 2010 and we could even see it in the so-called Apple iTablet.

An unannounced Samsung handset has just been reviewed and it's the S5510 and Unwired View points out that it's a bit like the Nokia 6600 Fold, but that doesn't really matter much. The Samsung S5510 clamshell handset has: a 2.1-inch QVGA internal display, 3G / Bluetooth support, an FM radio, a 3.2MP camera, 30MB of internal storage, and a microSD card slot. This handset should be available in late October or early November and could be around 200 ($292 USD) when it launches - unlocked I presume.

Motorola Sholes Passes FCC, May Get Launched as the Tao With WiFi

Labels: , , , , , ,

Another Android handset has just passed the FCC and some of us have been keeping a close eye on this handset. It's the Verizon-bound Motorola Sholes A855. The interesting part about this is that it could actually be launched as the Motorola Tao. The Tao appears to have EVDO Rev. A support and WiFi 802.11 b/g which we hope doesn't get pulled by Verizon, along with Bluetooth 2.0 +EDR and aGPS support. This handset is expected to launch sometimes next month (October), so let's hope they pull through.

Samsung M8920 Comes Packed With 12MP Camera With 3x Optical Zoom and AMOLED

Labels: , ,

Wow, this is probably going to be the best cameraphone to date. The M8920 or SCH-W880 looks like a camera with phone functionalities - apart from the traditional phone with camera functionalities, if you know what I mean. The M8920 has: a 3.3-inch AMOLED WVGA touchscreen display, WiFi / GPS / Bluetooth support, and a microSD card slot. Now those are pretty standard features - apart from the AMOLED display. But, the best part about this phone will be the awesome camera.

The M8920 has a 12MP camera with a xenon flash and LED flash that is capable of recording HD video and it also has 3x optical zoom - seen above. It even has a "mode dial [that is] usually found in a digital camera." It's shaping up to be pretty amazing and I can't wait to see how well this camera will shoot photos. I'm excited.

Oh yeah, this phone may have a 1GHz CPU.

Intel Announces Atom Chip Capable of 1080p Video Playback

Labels: , , , ,

At IDF, we have just gotten word that Intel announced their latest Atom chipset. This is a 45nm chip that is capable of displaying 1080p video in the H.264 format and it can also handle 3D graphics. For everything else that you need to know, just check out the excerpt and link below.

The upgrade is such that it should be one of the first SoCs capable of handling streaming video in Adobe's Flash 10.

Three models begin the lineup, all of which are clocked at 1.2GHz and consume between seven and nine watts of power. As the base model, the CE4100 lacks most video options and has a basic 200MHz graphics core. The CE4130 adds the full complement of AV, and the CE4150 gets a 400MHz core for more demanding tasks. Every chip has its own flash memory controller as well as built-in controllers for input and output, like SATA II and USB 2.0.

Intel hasn't said when CE4100-equipped devices will ship or named hardware customers, but Flash 10 for the platform should be ready sometime in the first half of 2010.
