BenQ Announces and Releases 10.1-Inch JoyBook Lite U102 Netbook

Labels: , , , , ,

That's right, BenQ has just announced their latest netbook. The Joybook Lite U102 has: a 10.1-inch LED-backlit display with a 1,024 x 600 resolution, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 250GB HDD, WiFi, 3G connectivity, an integrated 1.3MP webcam, and optional Bluetooth 2.1. This netbook is really portable, since it is measuring in at under an inch thick and weighs just 2.3 pounds. There are currently 2 battery options: a 3 and a 6-cell. It's running Windows XP and is now available in Taiwan, Thailand, and China. I don't know the current price and they also didn't mention whether or not we'll see this netbook outside of the aforementioned 3 places.

Sony Releasing Slim PS3 Next Month!?

Labels: , , ,

It seems kind of early doesn't it? We haven't heard Sony announce anything about the Slim PS3 yet, so this rumour could be short-lived. According to the latest rumour, Sony "signed manufacturing agreements with both Foxconn and Pegatron to build the revised model in time for July delivery." I'm excited, but no one knows if it's true, so we'll just have to wait. You do know July starts tomorrow, right? Let's hope they make the PS3 Slim backwards-compatible, because I still want to play some of my PS2 games.

Vodafone UK Launching Samsung S5600 Blade

Labels: , , , ,

It looks like Vodafone will be getting their hands on the Samsung S5600. But, they are going to change the name to the Samsung Blade and they've also decided to change the big square button to a triangular button shaped - somewhat - like a blade. If you remember, the Samsung S5600 Blade has: a 2.8-inch touchscreen QVGA display, HSDPA 3.5G connectivity, a 3.2MP camera, and a microSD card slot. Since Orange UK has the Samsung S5600 for free, Vodafone may also hit UK for free as well. The availability is still unknown.

So, Bell will be launching the BlackBerry Tour in Canada on July 17 for $699.95 CAD for full retail. This leads Boy Genius to believe that we could see it launch for $249.95 or $199.95 on a 3-year contract. The only thing that's for sure is the $699.95 full retail price tag.

Nokia Releasing Their First 12MP Cameraphone Next Year

Labels: , , , , ,

It's more than likely, I mean that's a ton of time for Nokia to get off their butts and wake up. According to this report, Nokia and Carl Zeiss have both confirmed the plans of releasing a 12MP cameraphone in 2010. This phone is expected to be revealed at next year's Mobile World Congress (MWC) and is also expected to have the same form-factor as the Nokia N86. Big names like Samsung (Pixon12 / M8920) and LG are expected to release their own 12MP cameraphones this year - heck even Sony Ericsson have the Satio. Nokia, wake up! It's what the fans want, even though megapixels aren't everything.

Labels: , , , , ,

The HTC Hero has now been spotted on the official Orange UK's website. They have confirmed that it could be available for free with a monthly contract. On the website, it's pegged with a "Coming Soon" tag, so I guess "soon" could mean around July 15. T-Mobile will also be releasing this handset, as the G1 Touch. Both Orange UK and T-Mobile will be selling the graphite model of the phone, so if you want to get a sexy white one, you'll have to find another way.

BlackBerry Tour Officially Hitting Verizon On July 12 for $199; Alltel-Branded BlackBerry Tour

Labels: , , , ,

The rumour on Saturday proved to be true. The BlackBerry Tour will be hitting Verizon Wireless on July 12 for $199 USD on a 2-year contract. So, BlackBerry fans, that's definitely a day to mark on your calendar. It just sucks that the Tour doesn't have WiFi! By the way, you can now pre-order this smartphone now.

Update: It looks like Verizon will also offer up a camera-free model of the BlackBerry Tour as well, according to Boy Genius. The camera-less model of the Tour will still retail for the same $199 USD price and is targeted for some businesses out there.

Here are the first photos (below) of a BlackBerry Tour from Alltel. I don't know when Alltel intends to release the BlackBerry Tour, but it should be in about 2 weeks.

Pachter Believes in the WiiHD, PS3 to Take Number 2 Spot, Xbox 360 to Fall Back to 3rd

Labels: , , , , , , , , ,

It's up to you whether you want to believe what analysts have to say, but I just thought that this was worth mentioning. An infamous analyst, Michael Pachter, has just announced his thoughts on the future of the 3 big console manufacturers: Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft.

First, Pachter went on to say that Nintendo's Wii will stay atop the console war, simply because of its "low price point, innovative control mechanism, and compatibility with standard definition televisions." He also suggests that the WiiHD - a Nintendo Wii with HD support - will help lead the way to staying at the top of the list - even for the next generation. According to him, the HD-capable Nintendo Wii could be available as early as next year.

Next up, he talks about the future of Sony's PS3. He doesn't say much about it, but he does mention that the PS3 will eventually catch up - and take the number 2 spot - to the Xbox 360 because it simply won the Blu-ray vs HD DVD war. I'll be in this boat soon enough.

He had some tough words for Microsoft's Xbox 360. According to his predictions, the Xbox 360 will eventually fall back to the number 3 spot because of its inability to sell consoles in Japan. But, he did go on to say that the Microsoft could sell twice as many Xbox 360s than the original Xbox and that's always a good thing.

Mobinnova Elan is Tegra-Equipped and Loved

Labels: , , , , , ,

What you see here could be the first laptop with the Nvidia Tegra chipset. It's expected to launch sometime in Q4 of this year and is looking quite sexy right now. This Mobinnova Elan netbook has: an 8.9-inch display, 3G connectivity, and has a battery that's expected to last quite long, thanks to the Nvidia Tegra. How long exactly? It's expected to play 10 hours of HD video and 24 hours of audio playback (the Boy Genius link says 24 days of audio playback, but I think that's fairly inaccurate). This netbook will run on Windows CE and - like I said - is expected to launch in Q4 of this year. I believe the price is still unknown at this point.

Nvidia Tegra-Equipped Phone Expected to Hit AT&T / T-Mobile In Q4 This Year

Labels: , , , , ,

According to Nvidia's GM of mobile, Mike Rayfield, we will see "one of the big five manufacturers" launch a phone with the Nvidia Tegra chipset by the end of the year. According to another source, this phone is expected to launch on AT&T / T-Mobile in Q4 for around $199 on a 2-year contract. If you don't remember, the Nvidia Tegra is expected to be a big deal. It's expected to push out "ridiculous computing power" on a small chipset that's expected to only suck around 1 watt of power. And the best part is - it will still be cheap to manufacture. So, a cheap chipset that will run HD videos and games? Count me in, I'm definitely excited for this. I hope by "big five" they don't mean LG, that could be a disappointment. Oh yeah, the OS is still unknown - I hope it's Android.

Blizzard Release a Bunch of StarCraft II News: Delayed Cause of WoW, Beta to Last 4-6 Months, No LAN, No Console Support

Labels: , , , ,

Blizzard released a lot of news about StarCraft II today. First, Blizzard's vice president, Rob Pardo, mentioned that StarCraft II has been delayed for so long because they had to work on another game, World of Warcraft. Next up is the lead designer on StarCraft II, Dustin Browder, who mentioned that the StarCraft II beta is expected to run somewhere between "four to six months." They still haven't mentioned when the beta will start, but I hope that it's soon because I want to have StarCraft II in my possession by the end of this year. Going back to Rob Pardo, he also mentioned that they don't have any plans to support LAN at this point, which will certainly leave a few fans upset. And just in case you didn't already know, Blizzard also mentioned that StarCraft II will not be making its way to any consoles - a "zero percent" chance. For more information about StarCraft II, you can click on one of the links below. If you want, you can also check out some hands-on review, courtesy of 1 UP and Kotaku.

Dell Working On An Android-Based MID, According to the WSJ

Labels: , , , , , ,

This may or may not be interesting to you, but according to the Wall Street Journal, Dell is working on an MID running on Google's Android OS. According to the source, it's a bit larger than the iPod Touch and could be around for this year's holiday season. The source also points out that this MID from Dell will run on an ARM processor, which could be a bad thing - when competing with the likes of a possible updated iPod Touch later this year and, of course, the Zune HD. Could Dell be replacing their supposed smartphone with this MID? Maybe Dell couldn't take the heat of other carriers, suggesting it was "indifferent". I'm not sure, but you can click on the link below for more information regarding this so-called MID from Dell.

First up, we have the Samsung S6700 slider that has: a 2.4-inch QVGA display, a 3MP AF camera with a dual-LED flash, GPS, 120MB of internal storage, a microSDHC card slot, and dual-band HSDPA support. Next up is the Samsung C5510. It's another slider with: a 2MP camera, a 2.2-inch QVGA display, and a microSDHC card slot. The next - and last slider - is the Samsung M2510 that has: a 3.5mm headphone jack, a 1.3MP camera, an FM radio, dedicated music keys, and DNSe audio enhancement. Last, and definitely least, is the Samsung M2310 that has: a VGA camera, 9MB of internal memory, a microSD slot, and quad-band EDGE connectivity. These are all fairly low-end handsets, so you won't see me walking around with one of these. The pricing and availability of all 4 handsets have not been announced yet, but who cares?

Windows Marketplace Launching With 600 Apps; Fennec Alpha 2 Now Available For WinMo Users

Labels: , , ,

Microsoft France's product manager for Windows Mobile, Audrey Zolghadr, has just mentioned that Windows Marketplace will launch with around 600 apps. This is pretty good, seeing how Palm's App Catalog launched and it still has only a few apps available. It'll be a pretty good start if half of these apps are decent. We'll just have to see how it does when it officially launches. On a side note, I can't wait for Windows Mobile 7.

Mozilla has just released Alpha 2 of their browser, Fennec. This time it's available for all Windows Mobile users and not just HTC Touch Pro owners - like Alpha 1. With this version, they improved a couple of things. Check the list below.

  • Improved panning performance

  • Newly designed theme

  • JavaScript error console is now built in

  • Improved add-on support

  • Numerous bug fixes

  • Improved UI polish

Lenovo IdeaPad S12 Gets New VIA Nano CPU Option

The IdeaPad S12 has been around since Wednesday, but Lenovo has already added another option to it. The IdeaPad S12 now has a new option for a VIA Nano ULV 2250 CPU with VIA Chrome9 HC3 graphics. This would drop $50 USD off of the original price of $500. This option will give you more speed - in some cases - but it will sacrifice more battery life, than the Atom, in the process. But, don't forget that you can always upgrade the standard 6-cell battery option if you like. So, that's $450 USD for the VIA Nano CPU-equipped IdeaPad S12 with a standard 6-cell battery option. Zune HD Expected to be $250 - $280, 64GB Model This Year Too!

    Labels: , ,

The Zune HD looks like it could be a competitor to the iPod Touch spec and price-wise - but probably not in the real-world unfortunately. The Zune HD is supposedly going to be available in 16GB and 32GB quantities and will be hitting markets this early September. The 3.3-inch OLED-packing Zune HD's pricing for the 16GB model is expected to be somewhere between $250 to $280 USD, which is about 10% cheaper than the 16GB iPod Touch. After the initial launch, it looks like a rumoured 64GB model will be available as well. I favour the Zune HD over the iPod Touch simply because of its OLED display, cheap price, and Teflon backing, which is much better than the smudge backing of the iPod Touch. It just sucks that the App Store for the iPod Touch is just so damn good.

Nokia Hitting Carriers With An Android-Based Netbook Next Year

Considering this market is dominated by the PC players, we believe Nokia could face an uphill battle to succeed in this market.

So, Nokia will be teaming up with Google's Android to enter the netbook market next year. But, it looks like Intel will be shut out of this project, since Nokia opted for an ARM-based netbook this time around. It's expected to hit carriers next year, so we could see Nokia and Intel's netbook later this year, supposedly Q3.

LG Unveils 2 Internet-Connected "Full LED" HDTVs With 240Hz Technology

    Labels: , ,

LG has just unveiled 2 new 55-inch "Full LED" HDTV with 240Hz technology - to get rid of that blur. The LG 55LH95 and 55LH93 have a contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1, thanks to 3,360 individual LEDs. These LED HDTVs are also Internet-connected and they still manage to be just 24.88mm thick, as you can see in the image above of its side profile. The 55LH95 and the 55LH93 will be retailing for $5,900 USD and $5,500 USD, respectively, and they will both be available in July.

In related news, LG also plans to release 42 and 47-inch "Full LED" HDTVs by the end of this year, but they won't manage to be as thin as this 55-inch monster. Below is what LG had to say.

LG Electronics Announces the Official Start of the Ultra-Slim Full LED LCD TV Era
Seoul (Korea Newswire) June 25, 2009 02:00 PM — LG Electronics (LG), a global leader and technology innovator in consumer electronics, today unveiled two new ultra-slim “full LED” LCD TVs in Seoul. The new 55-inch screens –- models 55LH95 and 55LH93 respectively –- lead the market in terms of picture quality, design and convenience.
“These products were designed specifically to target the high-end segment and offer unmatched quality and design,” said LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company President and CEO, Simon Kang. “These new models will change the LED LCD TV market landscape and we expect these devices to reinforce the premium image of LCD TVs in general,” said LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company President and CEO, Simon Kang.
LG’s ambitious new product line offers a brighter and clearer screen than competing products thanks to backlighting that employs a total of 3,360 LEDs –- seven times more than existing edge-lit LED TVs. LG’s full LED LCD models also features a 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio through enhanced dimming technology that divides the screen into 240 blocks. And with a refresh rate of 240 Hz, these TVs maintain a vibrant, smooth image even during fast-paced action scenes.
LG’s newest ultra-slim full LED LCD TVs employ patented technology that helps keep the overall chassis thickness down to just 24.8mm. This proprietary technology allows the LEDs to be spread-out horizontally and minimizes the distance between the LEDs and the screen. Another innovation offered for the first time in the new LED LCD TV is the enhanced wireless feature which eliminates the need for image compression. Content can be sent from DVD players, game consoles or home-theater units wirelessly without any degradation.
LG’s ultra-slim full LED LCD TV is priced at around KRW 7 million (approximately US$ 5,500) for the 55LH93 and around KRW 7.6 million (approximately US$ 5,900) for the 55LH95 model which will be launched in July 2009.
LG plans to aggressively expand the LED LCD TV business and is aiming for three to four million unit sales next year. Three different models of full LED LCD TVs will be offered to suit different market segments. The ultra-slim model will be positioned as the premium product with additional products in this category being announced later this year. The company will unveil less expensive 42-inch and 47-inch full LED LCD TVs by the end of the year without the ultra-slim feature.
LG is forecasting that the global LED LCD TV market will grow to 30 million units by next year and to 68 million by 2011, up from 3.1 million this year. LG is aiming to become the world’s second biggest seller of LCD TVs and predicts that the proportion of LCD TVs that feature LED technology will also grow from 2.6 percent this year to 20 percent next year and to 40 percent by 2011.
